Greetings from West Virginia! What a beautiful trip we had over to Beckley, West Virginia. It was a 260 mile picturesque scene with rolling hills, mountains, rivers and streams. En route, we passed by the New River Gorge Bridge in southern West Virginia. The New River Gorge Bridge is the longest steel arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere. It is 876 feet high. Every October, the West Virginians celebrate their annual Bridge Day. They draw crowds of over 100,000 people from all over the world. For $75, they allow 400 participants to parachute off of the bridge. Several years ago, when we ministered in Oak Hill, WV, the pastor took Larry, Donovan and me to see this unforgettable event. We were mesmerized.
Anyway, last Saturday at noon, one of the 400 participants was Brian Schubert from Alta Loma, CA, a retired police lieutenant. Back in 1966, he and a friend became the first people to jump from El Capitan, a nearly 3,000 foot tall rock formation in California's Yosemite National Park. On Saturday, Brian parachuted off the New River Gorge Bridge and his parachute failed to open, plunging him 876 feet to his death. What a shock for the thousands who were watching. The TV stations showed video of him jumping off the bridge. As he jumped from the bridge, I can only imagine the excitement he was feeling and how he was looking forward to sharing his experience with his colleagues after it was completed. What a tragic death! I am sure this man never dreamt that he had just paid $75 to jump into eternity.
Again, it reaffirms the fact that life is uncertain, and we need to live each moment as our last. 2 Corinthians 6:2 says, "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold now is the day of salvation." In other words...you can't count on tomorrow. You have to accept Christ now and be ready always to meet the Lord.
Last Sunday, we ministered at Calvary Assembly of God in Beckley, WV. It was great to be back there. We last ministered here ten years ago. When we pulled into the church parking lot, the years faded away, and it seemed as though we had just been there. We were graciously greeted by Pastor Allen Grondin, the Mus ic Pastor at the church. He ushered us into a candlelit dinner they were serving to honor the church choir who had rehearsed all day preparing for their upcoming Christmas Cantata. Wow! Did we ever come at the right time?! We were treated to oven baked Cornish hens, dressing, oven-baked seasoned potatoes, green beans, carrots, salad, pumpkin and cranberry muffins, a choice of 4-6 desserts, coffee, raspberry tea, sodas and with all of that, I still may have forgotten something. Are you hungry yet? Oh, was it delicious! The only problem was that we were so full we had a hard time setting up and rehearsing as we just wanted to lay down and take a nap.
Sunday morning, we were greeted by a loving congregation. We felt like we were home the minute we walked in. We have met so many wonderful young pastors and wives on this tour. Pastor John Jordan his wife, Stephanie, along with their three lovely children were no exception. They were such a joy to be with.
When we ministered at Calvary Assembly of God ten years ago, Pastor John and Stephanie were the Youth Pastors. A couple years later, they were voted in as Senior Pastors. We love their gentle spirits. Their congregation has taken on their personality....a wonderful reflection of Jesus' love, caring and compassion.
We were excited to return to Beckley for another special reason. Dr. Bose Mikkilineni, a surgeon and former Hindu, was saved in our service ten years ago. We had heard so many exciting reports of how God has totally changed his life. We were so anxious to meet him and his wife, Kim. We invited Dr. Bose and Kim to share a bit of their testimony in the morning service.
Kim shared the following, "I would invite Bose to special events at church but he didn't always go. I heard you were coming to minister and immediately decided to invite him to the meeting. I shared my intentions with my church friends. They just squealed and said they would be praying for him. Well, he came with me and that night in church, a couple, C.L. and Linda Wilkerson, who were counselors, sat next to us and were praying. After Larry preached and gave the altar call, C.L. reached over and asked my husband if he wanted to give his life to Christ. My husband readily responded, 'Yes.' Both my husband and teenage son went forward to receive Christ. What a difference God has made in our lives."
Dr. Bose said, "I didn't know that was going to happen to me that night, but I am sure glad it did. Our lives and marriage have changed completely."
Little did Dr. Mikkilineni know that the church had been praying for him. Larry and I were just blessed to be there when it happened. Now Dr. Bose is active in many areas of the church and has turned his profession as a surgeon into a pulpit to encourage and minister to his patients. He just beams with the love of the Lord. Before Dr. Mikkilineni left the church on Sunday, he asked us if we were still traveling on the road a lot. I nodded and said, "Yes...quite a bit." He said, "You help the people spiritually, and I try and help them physically and spiritually. God has called both of us to touch lives where we are."
I can't begin to tell you how much mileage and strength these testimonies have given us to keep on keeping on.
In January of 2007, Lord willing, we will have an additional update on their testimonies in the newsletter. Check it out!
If you would like to receive our monthly newsletter, please e-mail your address to us at mailto:llmin@venturecomm.net and we will be sure to get you on our mailing list.
This following weekend, we will be traveling to Lancaster, PA. We appreciate your prayers for the service that many will come to know Christ.
God bless you, and I will talk to you next week!

O-O-OUCH!
Last Monday our daughter, LaDawn called and told us that our grandson, Dante', was playing football with a bunch of guys at a youth convention in Rochester, MN. He was tackled by a big guy and consequently fractured his ankle. He had a cast put on and is now on crutches which will definitely slow him down for the next two months. The news sure made Grandma feel bad. I called and prayed for him assuring him that if I was there, I would spoil him and pamper him. He giggled!
